HOTTUB <3s THE BEASTIE BOYS: Our Thoughts on Yauch
Many artists despise being put in a box set by artists before them; a concept I find understandable given the nature of artists wanting to set one’s work apart from everyone else’s. But in the 6 or so short years HOTTUB’s been around, getting compared to the Beastie Boys was/is/and always will be an honor and a compliment of the highest degree.
It can also be a sore spot for us to be constantly compared to our boy counterparts, but the Beasties is always the exception. Besides the obvious reasons of being fronted by a trio, Hottub has always been greatly inspired by the care free, no holds barred, debaucherous, smart ass, balls to the wall energy, but most importantly, HEART that these guys embodied.
Its taken me a while to process what it is about Yauch’s death that’s really hit me to my core and I think I’ve finally figured it out. I must admit that, like most of the conclusions I’ve come to around death, it comes from a completely selfish place. My heart really goes out to his family and fans, obviously, but mostly to Mike Diamond and Adam Horowitz and the Beastie Boys moniker. The Beasties are a trio and there’s no way around it. With out any one of these guys, it can’t exist.
This is probably the biggest reality check on how I truly feel about our humble little group. Jen and Amber are my left and right tit, my left and right nut, my moon and my sun, my spoon and my fork. The idea that either of them should ever leave this earth breaks my heart into a million pieces.
So while I still have the great honor of sharing my life with them, I plan on continuing to create the most ridiculous grandma stories, terrorizing boys, making people laugh, and hopefully making this world a little bit smaller.
